On Saturday, April 29 in Kalorama Park the Adams Morgan Partnership BID will be presenting the inaugural Adams Morgan Pinewood Grand Prix.
For those not familiar, the Pinewood Derby is a longstanding boy scout tradition where the scouts start with a car kit (a block of wood, four wheels, and four nails) and create a car out of it. But this is Adams Morgan, so while the boys are still welcome to participate, this event is open to everyone regardless of age, gender, or whatever.
Car kits are available in the neighborhood at ACE Hardware, The Brass Knob, and Urban Dwell and consist of a block of wood, four plastic wheels, and four nails that act as the axles for the wheels. From that common starting point, participants are free to do whatever they want as long as the finished product conforms to the following specs:
- The width of the car shall not exceed 2-1/4 inches.
- The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
- The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
- The car will have no internal propulsion system. Cars are raced on an inclined track and gravity is the only form of propulsion.
We’ll be giving out trophies for the fastest overall car, for the winner of the business division, and other categories as well including best looking car.
The event will be held in Kalorama Park on Saturday April 29, 2017. Participants should be at the park to check in at 10 a.m. and the races will begin at noon. In addition to the racing, we’ll have food and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
